Making Chromebooks work for people who have disabilities

  



To be a visually impaired lady, I use assistive technology every day to create my working surroundings available and profitable. I feel grateful to work on the Chromebook team, which values my perspective as someone having a disability. Trying to get and embracing a varied group of perspectives may be the just correct way to develop for everyone. 


Month within the U October is usually Disability Work Recognition.S.--it's a meaningful time because it makes me reflect on how far systems have come. On the other hand, in addition, it reminds me how much more opportunity there's to create with accessibility at heart to make a more inclusive globe.


Today, I'm shining a limelight on some recent features that make Chromebooks more available for those who have disabilities. 


Switch your cursor color

Now you can change the color of one's cursor to improve its visibility and add a personal touch to your Chromebook. Choose from seven new colorings: red, yellow, green, cyan, blue, magenta, and red. This feature is designed to assist people who have reduced complements and eyesight in different ways Chromebook cursors could be personalized, like adjusting its size for further visibility. To adjust your cursor, go directly to the "Mouse and touchpad" portion of Settings.


Select-to-speak gets better

Select-to-speak lets people choose words on the screen being spoken aloud. You now have the choice to shade background text that isn't highlighted, which makes it much easier to concentrate on the words becoming recited. This can be especially ideal for people who have low vision and learning disabilities like dyslexia. To turn on this function, seek out "Select-to-speak settings" within Configurations. 


New ChromeVox enhancements

ChromeVox is the built-in screen viewer on all Chromebooks. Screen viewers are critical for people who are a blind or minimal vision to utilize computer systems. Voice Switching on ChromeVox now automatically changes the screen reader's voice in line with the language on the page. In the event the site is both English and Spanish, ChromeVox shall identify which tone of voice to utilize when browsing it aloud.
